Abstract

The cannonball jellyfish has been considered an important resource for resident fishermen in the municipalities of Guaymas and Empalme by generating direct and indirect jobs and providing financial resources for their families, which translates into an economic benefit for the whole the southern region of the state of Sonora. However, it seems that this fishery has exceeded its fishing effort, which has caused the arrival of this marine species to the beaches of Sonora to be less each year and, therefore, the volumes are increasingly minimal. In this sense, the broker and some fishermen from the region have moved to the north of the state of Sonora, specifically the Gulf of Santa Clara to the sound of the arrival of the amber jellyfish and the decrease in the biomass of the blue jellyfish in the south of sound. That is why this thesis characterizes the cannonball jellyfish fishery through in-depth interviews with the main actors in this fishery. An analysis of the diverse and complex problem that is currently externalized is presented from the perspective of the actors that participate in the value chain of the fishery, among which the need to make this fishery a sustainable and sustainable resource is emphasized, as well as how to reduce fishing efforts so that it can continue to be a source of economic development in the areas where this marine species is caught and exploited. Likewise, it is necessary that all the actors involved in the jellyfish fishery reinforce the communication and collaboration mechanisms, so that the management strategies used for the fishing of the cannonball jellyfish are really applied and influence to have a sustainable fishing of this fishing resource.
