This research is a documentary study with a mixed approach. After analyzing the collected information, it was determined that the state of Oaxaca stands out mainly for its cultural and natural characteristics. However, it is also known for the level of poverty it faces in relation to the rest of the country's federal entities, as it often ranks among the states with the highest levels of poverty. Additionally, its lack of productivity and economic dynamism is reflected in its limited contribution to the national GDP. Given these characteristics, one would expect its unemployment rate to follow the same trend as its poverty or productivity. Nevertheless, the research found that Oaxaca has, on average, the second-lowest unemployment rate in the period from 2005 to 2024, which is an atypical situation. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine the possible causes that explain this situation. It was concluded that informal labor and migration are the main causes of the low unemployment rates in the state.
